The ATW weavers had a busy end of the week getting to know the city’s contemporary art scene, as they reach the middle of their exchange and stay in Edinburgh.

To kick off their weekend, Karlie, Leith and Sophie attended the opening of Last Edit Made Seconds Ago, a collaborative moving image workby artists Rachel McBrinn and Ben Callaghan at Custom Lane.

On Saturday, the girls met weaver Fiona Mathison, former Weaver and Artistic Director and Consultant at Dovecot. ATW weavers visited Fiona at her studio at Rhubaba Gallery and Studios, where they discussed Fiona’s practice and weaving processes, and had a tour of the studios, meeting some of the artists that are based there.

Karlie says: ‘’It was great chatting to Fiona Mathison – we had a very interesting conversation about tapestry as a medium and her making process in particular.’’

The weavers then went on to Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, where artist and educator Duncan Robertson gave them a tour of the workshop facilities, as well as the residency spaces. Karlie, Leith and Sophie finished off their day with a visit at the Fruitmarket Gallery, where they saw works by Brazilian artist Jac Leirner.

Sophie commented: ‘’It was fantastic to meet some working artists in Edinburgh. Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop in particular is incredible – I would love to do a residency there. I have to come back!’’

The weavers continued their weekend with a Sunday trip to sculpture park and art gallery Jupiter Artland, accompanied by Dovecot Studios Director Celia Joicey.
